Scouts Improve the Environment by Planting Trees
On Earth Day 2011, Troops 46 and 211, and Packs 130 and 46, together planted 500 trees. Life Scout Henry Furler led this Hornaday conservation project to prevent erosion at a Houston city sports park. Scouts planted 500 tree seedlings to re-forest a wind break that will reduce wind speed and soil erosion of the adjacent soccer fields. The project was repored in the Southwest News and on Fox 26 TV News at Noon.
Eagle Scout Earns Gold Hammer Award
In February 2011, Rebuilding Together Houston selected Eagle Scout Michael Yang to recieve their Gold Hammer Award for exemplary community service. Michael's Eagle Scout project was a collaboration with Reuilding Together Houston, performing home repair and renovation for a low-income homeowner in need.
Scouts Staff the Ten Commandments Hike
In February 2011, Troop 46 and St Luke's UMC assisted the Sam Houston Area Council "Sixteenth Annual Ten Commandments Hike." This is a five mile hike, visiting ten beautiful older churches in the Museum District near downtown Houston. Troop 46 scouts and Asst. Scoutmaster Pete Nordloh staffed the event and St Lukes UMC provided transportation.
ASMs teach at Webelos Pin Day
In January 2011, Troop 46 scouts, ASMs and SM staffed the Golden Arrow District Webelos Pin Day where cub scouts earned Webelos achievements:
- ASM Fritz Merz taught the Geologist pin
- ASM Lynn Livingston taught the Artist Pin
Scouts deilver food to the Star of Hope Mission
In May 2010, The scouts delivered around 500 pounds of smoked brisket donated to the the Star of Hope Mission as part of their annual fund raising for camping equipment and summer camp. The Troop greatly appreciates the generous support of all who donated briskets both inside and outside of the St Luke's congregation.
